Goneva to face Thomund Teest

The Flyting Fijians have retained the services of Tigers wing Vereniki Goneva for their match with Ireland at Thomund Park.  Rather arrogantly the Irish are refusing to cap this match, whether the IRB would allow this colonial 1980s attitude in a nation where they weren't based is an interesting thought, especially when we see Wales cap games against club sides.  It would have been strong government if the IRB had forced the Irish to cap this match.  Another consequence is that should Fiji pull off a shock they won't get any benefit in the World Rankings and equally Ireland wouldn't lose any points.  In a tight race for 8th place a shock here could have made a huge impact.

Shame on you Ireland.  Shame on you IRB.

10 out of 10 for Peerless Parling

Geoff Parling is in line to make his tenth start for England as they take on Australia this Saturday at Twickenham.  Parling made his debut away to Scotland in last years Six Nations and hasn't missed a test since.  His calming lineout presence was a great boon to Tom Youngs last week and his physical ruck work is exemplary, though often underrated due to his wiry frame.

All 6 Tigers retain their places from last week, Manu Tuilagi winning his 15th cap, and Ben Youngs again has to make do with a place on the bench.

England (v Australia, Twickenham Stadium, Saturday 2.30pm)
15 Alex Goode (Saracens, 3 caps)

Visting Maori name side for tour opener

The New Zealand Maori have named their XV for their visit to Welford Road this Tuesday.

Controversial fly half Willie Ripia makes his first class come back after leaving the Western Force in January in disgrace.  Ripia was accused of stealing from teammates to fund a crippling gambling addiction. He has only played 8 games for Bay of Plenty's development side since and his inclusion in the tour has hit the headlines in his native New Zealand.

6 players are making their Maori debuts whilst a further 5 could do so from the bench.  The starters are Shane Christie, Elliot Dixon, Frae Wilson, Kade Poki, Charlie Ngatai and Kurt Baker.  Andre Taylor, Quentin MacDonald, Nick Crosswell, Jamison Gibson-Park, and Declan O'Donnell are all on the bench and waiting for their first taste of Maori action.

The bulk of the team is from the Highlanders (7), Hurricanes (6) and Cheifs (6) with only the Auckland based Blues having no representation after their poor Super Rugby Season.  Flanker Shane Christie and Jamison Gibson-Park have both been drafted for next years Super Rugby by the Crusaders and the Blues respectively.

Maori team:
1. Ben May (Hurricanes)
2. Hika Elliot* (Chiefs)
3. Ben Afeaki (Chiefs)
4. Jarrad Hoeata* (Highlanders)
5. Jason Eaton* (Hurricanes)

Goneva to face England at Twickenham

Vereniki Goneva will play opposite fellow Tiger Manu Tuilagi as he is named in the centres for Fiji's tour match at Twickenham on Saturday. Despite featuring mainly on the wing for Tigers Goneva is no stranger to the centre having won 10 of his 26 Fijian caps there and playing regularly in the position for Tarbes last season.

Goneva's inclusion brings the number of Tigers on show at Twickenham to 8 with 7 starting.

Other familiar names are Exeter's Sireli Naqelevuki and Gloucester's Akapusi Qera.  Llanelli's Deacon Manu captains from tighthead prop.

Tonga coach Epi Taione has today named his side to face Italy in Brescia on Sunday.  Tigers star Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve Mafi is named on the blindside and will be looking forward to facing off against clubmate Martin Castrogiovanni who will surely be in the Italy side.  This will be Steve's 7th cap and his first in Europe.

Just Gr8!

8 Tigers have been named by England supremo Stuart Lancaster for the 4 match Autumn International series.  There are 4 forwards: Dan Cole, Geoff Parling, Thomas Waldrom and new inclusion Tom Youngs as well as the awesome foursome of Ben Youngs, Toby Flood, Anthony Allen and Manu Tuilagi in the backs.  That foursome have only lost 2 of over 30 games played together at club level, surely it is time to see if they can cut it at international level too?

England will play Fiji, Australia, South Africa and then New Zealand.  The 8 players are in line to miss 5 Tigers games: 2 LV cup games, the Maori game, as well as Wasps away and Bath at home in the Premiership.

These 8 bring the number of Autumn calls on the Tigers to 13, including 4 props, as Mulipola (Samoa), Ayerza (Argentina), Castrogiovanni (Italy), Mafi (Tonga) and Goneva (Fiji) are also missing.  I'm sure the national press will remember that when we inevitably struggle in the international window.

Congratulations to Dan, Geoff, Thomas, Toby, Manu, Anthony and most of all Ben and Tom brothers in arms.  Hopefully they will emulate the Underwoods and enjoy many England games together (a few grand slams wouldn't go a miss either!) and create a life time of happy memories for all those family Christmases of the future.

Tom Youngs: What's the fuss about?

Tom Youngs is on the verge of making his test debut after just 6 Premiership starts in the position.  That is a phenomenal rise for the son of an England cap, his farther Nick, and the elder brother of another, Ben (you’ve probably heard of him he’s quite good).

So what is all the fuss about?

As befits the kind of player who played age group international rugby in the centre he has slick passing skills and the rugby brain to know when to use them.  Witness his cracking off load in the build up to Thomas Waldrom’s try on the opening day against London Welsh.  Tigers have also managed to adapt their tactics to his unique skill set by often having him as first receiver; confident in his ability to spin the ball wide to Toby Flood or Anthony Allen to use an overlap or charge up the middle if nothing is on.

Richard Cockerill says in his book “raw aggression is vital in front five players” and “its 80% attitude and desire against 20% technique”.  Youngs certainly has that raw aggression and desire, 2 seasons learning his trade in the championship with Nottingham, at a completely new and sometimes baffling position, are evidence of the desire to make it in the game.   And aggression is the whole reason he moved to the front row in the first place.  The legend has it that a sin binning on October 10th 2008 whilst playing for the second team against Saracens, and captaining the side to boot, prompted Heyneke Meyer to suggest the position switch.  His crime?  Scrapping with a Sarries prop.

But we can’t just forget that 20 technical percent.  And neither does Youngs.  His scrummaging simply is to the standard Tigers desire, and given that this is a club where Julian White once roamed the open pasture that is some compliment.  It easily makes his scrum work international standard and a real strength.  Apparently on age group duty, as a centre remember, he used to practice scrummaging against a young Dan Cole, that’s what I call foresight.  His lineout work has come on leaps and bounds since I first saw him play in the LV cup 3 seasons ago and whilst still the chink in his armour it is merely a scratch on an otherwise perfectly polished skill set.  Of course it is difficult to separate system errors which aren’t his fault from simple miss-throws which are, but that is a challenge he’ll face for England too.

In an age where hooking is undergoing a retro conversion back to the link men and the smaller mobile hookers, like Peter Wheeler was and Schalk Brits is, Youngs is perfectly adapted to this type of game.  He played a season of 7s for England in the IRB World Series just 6 months before the Meyer inspired switch to the smaller spaces of the front row and whilst bulkier now he still shows glimpses of the player lean enough to be a sevens specialist.

Whilst Youngs might be startlingly inexperienced at first glance, 6 Premiership starts and 2 Heineken Cup starts, he actually carriers the experience that a 25 more or less should.  He made his Leicester debut at 19 and has featured in 39 games for Leicester (including 10 at centre) and whilst on loan at Nottingham he made 40 appearances.  He’s played for England at every age group, he’s played for England 7s in the IRB World Series and he’s played for England’s midweek side this summer.  That is substantially more experience than Manu Tuilagi had on debut and more than enough to dispel any thoughts that he isn’t ready for international rugby.

So what’s the fuss about?  Put simply he is the kind of dynamic and aggressive hooker that English rugby is failing to produce in enough numbers.  He’s overcome the kind of setbacks that breed huge mental toughness and is putting in displays that remind this writer at least of the cocky aggressive nuggety hooker that he first watched from the Crumbie terrace: Richard Cockerill.  No wonder he’s starting every week!

Logo named in Samoan November Tests Squad

Logovii Mulpola has been named in Samoa's squad for this November's Autumn Internationals.  They play Canada (in Colwyn Bay, which is a bit of a joke) on November 9th, Wales on November 16th and France on November 24th.  He will miss 4 Tigers games but only 1 in the Premiership (Wasps Away on November 24th), and he could make that if he fails to gain selection in the final test.

Once again there is a suspicious lack of Northampton players in a "minor" nations test squad as Ken and George Pisi are both left out.  Consider Tongahuia not playing for Tonga between the 2007 and 2011 World Cups and American Samu Manoa not representing USA at the 2011 World Cup and very dodgy pattern emerges.  Whether these are genuine selection stinkers by the respective nations or undue politiking from the "Saints" is surely for PRL and the IRB to investigate.  It undermines the Premiership when one side has its international players available and its rivals doesn't and it undermines international rugby when a nations best representatives are being barred from playing.

Harlequins have Maurice Faasavalu selected but James Johnston misses out in a competitive front row to Mulipola and his elder brother Census Johnston of Toulouse.

Another notable name is of course Alesana Tuilagi who will be part of the touring party.

Goneva named in Fijian tour squad

The Fijian Rugby Union has today named the squad for the Flying Fijians 4 game November tour, including Tigers dynamic new winger Vereniki Goneva.  There are 2 capped internationals against England and Georgia plus a mid-week game against Gloucester.  There is also the non-cap game against Ireland.  In some 1970s throw back Ireland has decided that the Fijians aren't worthy of a test game, even though there is no other Ireland match that weekend.  Standard arrogance from the Irish, yet still a disgrace.  I wonder if the Dublin based IRB would have allowed another team to protect itself from losing ranking points before the December Rugby World Cup draw.
